Lord Hill Farms Wedding // Christy and Matthew // Snohomish Wedding Photographer

I am so excited to share this Lord Hill Farms Wedding with you all! Lord Hill Farms is literally five minutes down the road from my husband’s parent’s home one direction, and five minutes down the road from the very venue that my husband and I got married at almost ten years ago! Any time I have a Snohomish wedding it transports me back to that sunny July day in 2010. Driving to Lord Hill Farms was especially reminiscent of our very own wedding day – it was overcast and the conditions were perfect. I know so many people want beautiful blue skies on a wedding day, but truth be told, overcast skies are much more photo-friendly! The clouds make a giant soft box out of the sky, allowing us to take photos pretty much anywhere we want without harsh light! Added bonus? Suits and wedding gowns are almost always made up of layer upon layer of fabric that doesn’t breathe well… so if you run a little on the warm side, an overcast day will keep you from breaking a sweat too much.

Christy and Matt were referred to me by a fellow photographer friend who specializes in portraits and real estate photography. (Thank you Rachel! I love personal referrals!!! They’re truly the best.) We met on a morning during last winter’s snow storm and as soon as I started chatting with them, I knew I wanted to have the opportunity to work with them! Christy and Matt are both very driven, goal oriented people… the kind of people I like to surround myself with. I loved getting to know them and sat on pins and needles in the following weeks, waiting to know if I would be their chosen wedding photographer. Thankfully Matt emailed me saying after much consideration, I was “the one” and we started planning their engagement session. Christy and Matthew’s Lord Hill Farms Wedding filled my creative soul to the brim. I cannot tell you how many times I looked at Christina (second shooter and portrait photographer extraordinaire) and said, “today is SO GOOD. Wouldn’t it be incredible if EVERY wedding day was like this?!” The weather cooperated, the wedding party was attentive and ready to go on time, family members were active participants in family photos, even the kiddos during the ceremony were cheesing for our cameras. The sun came out at all the right times. The timeline was flawless. And, all those amazing things aside, at the end of the day Christy and Matt became husband and wife… which is the most important part of the entire day. It was absolute perfection.

Favorites from Christy and Matt’s Lord Hill Farms Wedding day:

  • Not only was the morning weather perfect for Christy and Matt’s Lord Hill Farms Wedding, the timeline was too. Like many other wedding photographers, I send a wedding magazine with tips and tricks to help make my clients’ wedding day photographic experience a good one. Christy and Matt took note of some of the timeline tips in my guide and had plenty of buffer time throughout their wedding day. We were always within five minutes of where we wanted to be on our timeline, which was fantastic!!! This gave a little grace for unexpected tasks, like when Christy had to steam a few wrinkles out of her dress at the last minute or when the flower girls were prepped and ready to go for wedding party photos. Buffer time in a wedding day timeline gives everyone a little grace and helps the day run smoothly.
  • Christy and Matt love their people. They spoiled their friends with beautiful gifts – Christy gifting her bridesmaids with handmade bracelets to wear at the wedding and Matt gifting his groomsmen leather toiletry bags with their names branded into the leather. They also gave their flower girls sweet gifts… and took time before the ceremony to show their parents their appreciation and love by gifting them handmade jewelry, toiletry bags, and ring dishes. Gift giving is a known love language and Christy and Matt showered their loved ones with beautiful, meaningful gifts to commemorate their wedding day and to thank their friends and family for everything they had done leading up to it.
  • The color!!! Christy and Matt selected a gorgeous coral and navy color palette for their wedding day – and the colors bounced off the garden backdrop all around Lord Hill Farms.
  • Trust in portrait locations! Christy and Matt wholeheartedly trusted my suggestions for portrait locations and, because of that, their portrait sections of their wedding gallery are ENORMOUS! We never had to made adjustments to location due to unfortunate lighting changes – the weather and group trusted my second shooter and I to do our jobs and as a result EVERYONE wins!!! We picked portrait locations within short walking distance to the getting ready and ceremony spaces, which means we spent less time walking to spots and more time taking photos. I am so thankful when couples place 100% trust in me and my photographic abilities. Now, it should go without saying that I am ALWAYS open to suggestions and even ask my couples prior to their wedding if there are any spots at their venue that they envisioned photos happening, but this added trust in me and my skill really helps keep the day running smooth and ultimately results in MORE photos for my clients! Everyone truly wins.
  • Sunset. I say this nearly every time. But sunset, sunset, sunset. Wedding days FLY by so fast. (Christy and Matt ended up added about an hour of coverage to their reception because time quite literally sped up on their wedding day.) Sunset is one of my favorite times to steal a couple away from their reception for 10-30 minutes – to walk a little further for some pretty portraits in gorgeous light… and it also gives couples the opportunity to have some ALONE time (with a couple photographers and videographer in tow) as husband and wife. Matt and Christy were very on board with sneaking away for sunset photos. The reception timeline got away from us a bit and we caught the very end of sunset and had more “blue hour” photos… and then we visited the pond on the grounds of Lord Hill Farms for some smoke bomb reflection shots before heading back to the party!
  • Flexibility. Christy and Matt had a large guest count (200+ people!) and wanted to be sure to interact with each guest. They also had a ton of family in one place, at one time, and had some extended family photo requests that were not only important to them as a couple, but also to their parents and family in attendance. With the reception raging and daylight slipping away, Christy and Matt worked with their DJ and I to modify their timeline to ensure they got the extended family photos that were important to so many people that had come to celebrate their marriage. With that, we got the shots done (and they’re awesome!) and they decided to forgo formal photography coverage for their bouquet and garter toss. I think, in the long run, the family photos we worked so hard to wrangle everyone together for and capture have more long term meaning and value then photos of Christy and Matt tossing bouquets and garters to single friends in attendance. Their flexibility with this and willingness to roll with the punches resulted in family photos that left my cheeks aching from smiling while editing. They emphasized the moments that mattered most – having all that family together – and that says so much about them as a couple.
  • The sentiment. Matt had Christy’s engagement ring custom designed by the same ring shop that made his parent’s ring. They went back for their wedding bands and their wedding ring ensemble is quite possibly one of my most favorite of all time. Simple, modern, sleek Totally perfectly complimenting Christy’s classic style. And I LOVE that they went for gold bands in a world where white gold and platinum are the more common choice. So classic and traditional with a gorgeous modern twist. (And, because of this, you’re about to see a bunch of ring shots below….)
